1/14 Scale RC Cars

1/14 cars are around 30cm long: small enough to keep costs down, big enough to cope with a park. It's the scale where budget brushless cars really shine.

A compact performance size

Budget brands have adopted 1/14 as their go-fast size. MJX, Rlaarlo and WLtoys all make brushless 1/14 cars that, on a 3S battery, are faster than many 1/10 cars costing twice as much. The smaller size keeps parts and batteries cheaper, and the car still fits in a backpack.

On really rough ground a 1/14 will bounce about more than a 1/10, so it's at its best on short grass, dirt tracks, car parks and skate parks.

1/14 cars to look at

What to check: whether the car is brushed or brushless, whether the speed controller takes 3S, and whether the battery uses a standard plug. Budget 1/14 cars often use their own connectors, so a spare pack from the same brand is the easy option. The battery guide explains plugs and cell counts.

For more on the MJX range, see the Hyper Go buying guide. The Rlaarlo guide covers the XDKJ buggies.

Questions we get asked

How big is a 1/14 RC car?
Typically 28 to 35cm long. That's about halfway between a 1/16 and a 1/10.
Is 1/14 good for off-road?
On short grass, dirt and gravel, yes. In long grass a 1/10 or a monster truck copes better.
Why are 1/14 brushless cars so fast?
They're light, and budget makers fit motors and speed controllers that take 3S batteries. Lots of power in a small car means high top speeds.
